A house with history
Since 1906, the Cresta Palace Celerina has shaped Engadine hospitality with its grandeur and its privileged location in the midst of the hotel park.
The Art Nouveau spirit is still palpable today – charming, authentic and full of life. At the same time, the house remains modern, open to new ideas and managed with great care. A grand hotel that continually reinvents itself while staying true to its character.

1820 – 1823
Turning toward tourism
From 1820 onwards, “modern” roads were also built in Graubünden. In 1882, the Gotthard railway diverted significant transalpine traffic away from the canton, prompting a stronger focus on tourism, which – after the Franco-Prussian War – developed into an important economic sector.
1903 – 1906
Opening of the Cresta Palace Hotel
In 1903, the Albula railway was opened as far as Celerina. It brought the Engadine the anticipated major upswing, especially in winter.
Mr. Meng, Mr. Piderman and Mr. Gyr formed an initiative committee with the aim of building a larger hotel in Celerina as well. In February 1905, the new project was presented, and on 15 April 1905 the company was founded. Just 14 months later, the Cresta Palace Hotel opened its doors.
Since many English guests spent their holidays in the Engadine, tennis and golf facilities were considered essential. At times, up to five golf courses were available. English championships were held, and in winter, competitions took place on the bobsleigh track and on the Cresta Run.
And the mountains were alluring then, as they are today. Winter sports such as skiing, sledging, ice skating and curling became increasingly popular, and the first horse races were already being held.

1912 – 1925
New building
As space soon became insufficient, a new annex with additional 100 beds was inaugurated as early as 1912. With the outbreak of the First World War, circumstances changed dramatically, and the hotel was temporarily used as military quarters.
In 1925, the first eight rooms were equipped with running water.

1929 – 1953
Turbulent years
The stock market crash of 1929 and the ensuing economic crisis brought the rise of tourism in Graubünden to a halt. The overvaluation of the Swiss franc, along with travel and currency restrictions, added further difficulties. Hotel visitor numbers dropped drastically, and between 1931 and 1937 the average occupancy rate settled at a low 24 percent.
Between 1939 and 1946, the hotel remained closed for seven years.
1960s
New Hall with Swimming Pool
In the 1960s, the demand for in-house hotel swimming pools grew steadily. Fitness was becoming increasingly popular, and in 1966 a new hall with a swimming pool was inaugurated.
The venerable guest room Furnel eventually gave way to what is now the Vita Pura area.

1990– 1992
Modernisation of the Kitchen
In 1990, the kitchen was renewed and equipped with state-of-the-art appliances. It is one of the few hotel kitchens to benefit from natural daylight.
Just two years later, the west terrace was transformed into a light-flooded winter garden.
1998 – 2016
Renovations and extensions of the hotel
In 1998, the “Jugendstil Hall” (Art Nouveau Hall) underwent a gentle renovation. In 2005/06, the new 1,200 m² wellness area was inaugurated, and in December 2016 it was expanded with the addition of the “staziun da basa” Activity Center.
2022 – 2025
Art Nouveau Reimagined
In 2022, the Cresta Palace once again made history, marking an important milestone in the legacy of this iconic hotel. In just three months of construction, 40 rooms and suites were lovingly renovated from the ground up and redesigned as a tribute to the aesthetics and elegance of Art Nouveau.
Particular attention was paid to detail and to creating a warm atmosphere, translating characteristic Art Nouveau elements into the present day – combined with the advantages of a modern room product that leaves nothing to be desired.

2025
Another Chapter of Hotel History
Just in time for the start of the 2025 summer season, guests can look forward to 20 gently renovated “Art Nouveau” rooms and junior suites on the first and second floors of the east wing. These additions further enrich the stylish room offering with another highlight.
The new interior design reflects the colour scheme of the comprehensive renovation of the west wing completed in 2022, while deliberately setting its own accents – carpets, curtains and furniture echo the characteristic design language of the Art Nouveau era, lending the rooms a sense of timeless elegance.
The Grand Restaurant has also been carefully redesigned – the elegance of the Belle Époque can be felt in every corner of this impressive space.
